sketches & notes

Life has been a little hectic lately and most of my drawings & paintings have appeared on lists of things to do.

Also this little guy appeared when I was trying to show Ansel some key places in my home state of California...

These little fairy magicians were helping me remember the words to a song:

And this guy is illustrating a point - his toes are beyond strange and his arms are way off, but maybe that's part of the point ;)
My first 5 attempts at this cartoon all looked like they were doing yoga, so when this guy showed up, I decided to be happy with the result.

bubble people

Yesterday we were talking about those plastic bubbles that you can wear and run around and bump into people.

morning doodles

Some of my favorite moments are when Ansel and I are lingering over morning coffee, maybe listening to the radio, tossing ideas back and forth, doodling.

We were talking about how March was generally a hard month (in Rochester, weather-wise, it's not really winter anymore but not quite yet spring) and Ansel mentioned that Julius Caesar might agree...

funny face

There is an honesty in drawing yourself. It is unexpectedly hard, sometimes - looking in the mirror, looking back and forth at your paper, seeing all those features, hearing the things you say to yourself about those features - and unexpectedly rewarding. Learning about yourself. Learning how to see others through learning how to see yourself ("oh, the eyes go here, and they occupy this space with the nose, and the mouth...I see...").

This cartoon I drew after watching Funny Face again. The idea that Audrey Hepburn could ever be frumpy makes me laugh. And Kay Thompson is SUCH a ham!

st jordi's dragon

Though it's a bit early, I thought I'd post this little drawing of St. Jordi's dragon, from whose blood sprang a rose tree…

St. Jordi's Day is actually April 23.

travel

Travel, usually on my mind practically all the time, has been on my mind even more than usual lately.

Even doodles end up looking like compasses.

I draw maps, I make plans.

Like most people who love to travel, I love to travel.
Unlike most people (at least, as far as they let on) who love to travel, however, I also dread it.
It's so hard!

Who goes on one of those travel shows and talks about how they had to get to the airport in Rome for a plane at 5 am and there was no train that early so they had to take a taxi at 11 pm the night before only it wasn't an authorized taxi because those were all already off-duty, it was a very sketchy unofficial taxi and the only language you shared with the taxi driver after running through all the options was French, and yours is patchy at best, and you decided on a price before you got in and it was all you had but it was less than he wanted so you thought he might try to extract the remainder from you some other way (horror) and sure enough the whole way there he told you how "belle" you were and at one point even looked like he was about to exit the highway in some deserted location and you had your hand on the car door handle the whole time, gripping it, ready to fling yourself out of the car if need be, and you got there, to the airport, and then spent the whole night on an upper floor looking down at the people cleaning the floors below, and reading most of Anna Karenina...

Or about how they got stuck in a small room in a youth hostel with two young women with the longest and most mysterious night-time beauty regimens in the history of womankind and a serious case of jet-lag, the combination of which had almost murderous results?

In my complicated wanderlust, I dug up some old drawings that made me smile:

Eating is complicated for me when I travel. I want to eat everything. If I could, I would have 5 or 6 meals a day. Plus snacks, and coffee breaks.

Of course, I LOVE to travel.

LOVE LOVE LOVE

a selection of daily doodles, 2013

Well, this was the first year of the Daily Doodle, in which I did something almost each day (I forgot 3 or 4 times during the year, not bad I think), a doodle, a painting, a thought, a sketch.

JANUARY

It's pretty incredible to be able to dump all these drawings on my floor and look at them. Some are really just scribbles, some are more elaborate. Some of them are funny, some of them goofy, some of them are tiny, some are big... they're done on scraps of paper, pieces of cardboard, magazine pages, etc etc… some I can't scan because you have to hold them in your hand and unfold them.
